The Year the Heat Divided the Wine World

Europe’s hottest summer on record compressed harvest windows and tested every region’s limits. The best 2022s show concentration without excess — and the Southern Hemisphere offered a cooler counterpoint.

If 2021 tested Burgundy’s patience with frost, 2022 tested the entire northern hemisphere’s relationship with heat. Europe endured what scientists called its worst drought in five centuries, and wine country bore the brunt. In Bordeaux, the Gironde recorded forty-eight days above 90°F during the growing season, nearly triple the fifty-year average. Across the Côte d’Or, parched hillside soils cracked under a sun that refused to relent. Harvest arrived a month early in many appellations: Burgundy picked in the final days of August—one of the earliest harvests in modern memory, though still later than the exceptional 2020, and Bordeaux began bringing in fruit before the end of August. The concept of a “normal” growing season, already strained by a decade of warming, felt increasingly quaint.

A Vintage of Contrasts

But the story of 2022 is not a single story. While Europe roasted, Australia’s Barossa Valley told a quieter story: mild conditions by Barossa standards, no days above 40°C, February cooler than average, and a longer, less compressed ripening window than growers had seen in years. The result was Shiraz of unusual poise, with lower alcohol and a perfumed restraint that defied the region’s reputation for power. Even within Europe, geography drew sharp lines. Rioja faced its hottest year on record, yet the altitude and diurnal swings of Rioja Alta still offered the best sites a measure of relief; enough, in the hands of careful growers, to preserve aromatic lift in Tempranillo, while the Douro’s ancient schist terraces, engineered over centuries for exactly this kind of heat, delivered concentrated reds that rivaled wines at many times the price. What 2022 revealed, more clearly than any vintage in recent memory, is that terroir is not just soil and slope—it is a region’s capacity to absorb the extremes.

The human factor mattered just as much as the geological one. Producers who had invested in climate adaptation, earlier picking protocols, canopy management to shield fruit from direct sun, organic soil practices that retained moisture, navigated the heat with confidence. Those still farming as if it were 1995 did not. The gap between the best wines and the worst within the same appellation has never been wider. In a vintage like 2022, the producer’s name on the label matters more than the appellation printed beneath it.

Where the Value Lies

The buying opportunities in 2022 cluster around regions whose geography or tradition made them naturally resilient. Rioja and the Douro both delivered wines that rival Europe’s most celebrated appellations at prices their European peers have long surpassed. Barossa’s La Niña reprieve produced Shiraz of a caliber that may not recur for years. In Champagne, the heat that punished the south handed the north a gift—base wines of uncommon richness that will shape non-vintage blends for the better. And in Bordeaux, the Right Bank’s cooler clay soils quietly outperformed the Left Bank’s gravel, offering structured reds that outpace their pricing.
