Domaine Jamet
Côte-Rôtie, Northern Rhône — three generations, twenty-plus lieux-dits, one wine
Côte-Rôtie, Northern Rhône · Founded 1950 (own-name bottling since 1976) · Jean-Paul, Corinne & Loïc Jamet
In 1950, Joseph Jamet planted his first 0.35 hectares of vines on the steep granite terraces above the Rhône. He sold the grapes to négociants for the first 26 years. The first wine bottled under the Jamet name came out in 1976. The estate has been working those terraces ever since.
Côte-Rôtie sits on the right bank of the Rhône just south of Lyon — a single south-facing slope of granite and schist, never more than a few hundred meters wide, vertiginous enough that some parcels are nearly unworkable. Jamet farms across more than twenty lieux-dits scattered up and down the slope — Fongeant, Côte Blonde, La Landonne, Chavaroche, Bonnivères, more. The estate makes one wine. Every plot goes into the same assemblage.
The Assemblage Tradition
Jean-Paul Jamet took over from his father Joseph in 1991. His wife Corinne joined him in the cellar. Their eldest son Loïc joined the team in 2013, marking the third generation. In the same year, Jean-Paul’s brother Jean-Luc departed to form a separate Domaine Jean-Luc Jamet on the family’s Lancement lieu-dit — a clean split, and worth knowing about for anyone shopping the label by name.
Why Jamet Matters
Whole-cluster fermentation. Foot-trodden cap punching. No new oak. Long, gentle élevage in older barrels. The blend is the wine: Jamet refuses to bottle single-lieu-dit cuvées, arguing that the Côte-Rôtie tradition is the assemblage itself. Kermit Lynch, who imports the wines to the US, calls Jamet “the pinnacle of classic Côte-Rôtie.” Allocations in the United States are tight, and the wines reward keeping. A 2022 bottle drinks now after decanting and will age twenty years easily. This is what the Northern Rhône sounds like when no one is trying to remix it.
